Angelena Demaria

Under the Lippy

Joy of first love amongst the blackcurrants; sadness for the young refugee who falls; a strange bird nesting in foreign soil; guilt as an endangered mother shark fights to keep her baby; rage as women – honorary men in wartime – are expected to be ‘pretty in pink’ now as they hit the glass ceiling; changing one’s perspectives throughout life. All under the exasperated eye of Goddess the Creator, who blames God’s poor management skills!

A WINNER OF THE INDIGO FIRST POETRY PRIZE 2024

I have long admired the poems of Angelena Demaria, for her mastery of language, sharp observations and dry humour. Her poems in ‘Under the Lippy’ will make you smile, touch your heart and make you think. Each one is a gem, whether it is the hauntingly sad On Air, written after the Kings Cross and Russel Square bombings, the keen observation of Adonis Blue in the Alley, or the empathetic Costa Poets, and The Conscripted Carer. This volume is one to carry with you, to dip into, savour, laugh, think, and enjoy.
