In Small Finds Catherine Ayres uses poetry as a personal archaeological process to connect ancient and modern women across time.
In the collection’s three sections - Ancient, Splintered and Modern - the poet examines the landscapes of both Hadrian’s Wall and the domestic edgelands of her Northumbrian home town, finding echoes of her life in the scant remains of Roman women, and echoes of their lives in her own domestic existence.
Like their archaeological equivalents, these poems are small finds, unique and personal artefacts bearing witness to the forgotten details of women’s lives.

THE AUTHOR
Catherine Ayres is a teacher from Northumberland. Her first poetry collection, Amazon, was published by Indigo Dreams in 2016. She recently completed a creative writing PhD at Northumbria University, focusing on using poetry as an archaeological process to link modern women with Roman women living in the forts on Hadrian’s Wall. Small Finds is part of that research.
